Elements of Art Contact Sheet

The elements of art: Lines, shapes, texture, and value are possibly the only real way to structure or give a pathway to art such as photography. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so art is not something that is easy to teach but these features give students like me a directive and goal. It gives us practice and a chance to learn what is attractive to the human eye and how these basics of photography attract people. Lines are directional. they direct or point the viewer to a specific spot or direct. Shapes are repetition. people like similar or repeating things. So music notes or things in symetry are attractive to the human eye. Then we have texture. Texture gives a feeling to the art, like one can reach out or feel how rough or bumpy a surface is. Finally we have value. Value has no true definition or exact science. the only clue we have for it is contrast between light and dark. This contract can I've meaning or add depth to the picture and gives it a little something more than what meets the eye.

This is a fan from my ceramics class. There were quite a few tools and geometric items that could be use for lines, I picked this photo because in the hour that I spent in there this fan was my favorite item. It was large, industrial sized, rusty and quite unattractive, but its imperfections make it beautiful. I love how the rust speckled the metal and how even the gentle bends in its frame seem unnoticeable because it blends well. The lines are not straight, but you would never notice unless you looked.

In this picture you see the lyrics "I will follow you" from a christian song that my mother was practicing for our church. Surrounding it are these notes that all kinda looked the same to me. Even though Those notes mean something to her they meant little to me compared to the lyrics. That is why I focused on only the lyrics despite all the delicate shapes around it.

This is light from one of the crystal wings of a dragonfly I have on my bedroom window. My room is at an angle that the sun never really touches it and at the right time of day the room is transformed from its dreary gray box to a color book world full of rainbows and light. Its as if the walls sparkle and just for an hour the room is filled with a secret joy.

This is Alex Ayala. A common seen between us is driving somewhere either to the store on an errand for his mother. We don't go many places but, there is always somewhere to be and something to do. This is a photo of when he makes this face where his jaw is slack and his lips relax because he is so focused on driving.
